PROGRAM I
Research Exchange: Experimental pharmacology
Head: Rüştü Onur, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chairman
Description: In this section, research is focused on the effects of K+-H+ ATPase inhibitors (omeprazole, lansoprazole) on contractile responses of cardiac, skeletal and smooth muscle preparations isolated from experimental animals. Indirect evidence for the presence of K+-H+ ATPase in guinea pig heart is documented. This ionic pump may have a regulatory role in the contractile function of muscular tissues and may interact with Na+-K+ ATPase.
Requirements: Basic knowledge in physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology.
Language: Turkish, English
Duration: 4-6 weeks
Period: Except July and AugustPROGRAM II
Research Exchange: "Low perfusion states" research
Head: M. Oğuz Güç, M.D., Ph.D.
Description: Lack of adequate blood supply inflicts significant injury to the tissues. Myocardial infarction, septic shock and invasive surgical interventions resulting in ischemia and reperfusion can all be regarded as ‘low perfusion states’ in which powerful biological mediators are involved. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are being investigated by using standard in vivo cardiovascular experimental techniques in addition to ultrasonic perivascular blood flow or tissue nitric oxide measurement studies.
Requirements: Adequate background in basic animal experimentation and voice interview
Language: Turkish, English
Duration: 8 weeks
Period: Throughout the year except July and August.PROGRAM III
Research Exchange: Integrative neuroscience
Head: Hakan S. Orer, M.D., Ph.D.
Description: Our research is focused on the integration of baroreceptor reflex mechanisms. We hypothesized that non cardiovascular sensory afferents exert modulatory actions on autonomic cardiovascular centers. Experimental procedures include in vivo blood pressure and heart rate monitoring with simultaneous postganglionic sympathetic nerve discharge recordings, stereotaxic surgery and brain stem microinjections. Spectral analysis methods are extensively used.
Requirements: Basic knowledge in neurophysiology, good surgical skills.
Language: Turkish, English, French
Duration: 4-6 weeks
Period: September thru March
